Provenance and status

The site exists to hold a standard it also has to meet. This page is the working record.

What it is built from

Every page is written from one research document, a merged reference on invisible forms of government and control, version 2.0, September 2026. It is in the repository as INVISIBLE_CONTROL.md and it is the source of everything here.

The document itself merges two research streams.

Stream one produced the method, the six core thinkers, the domains of control, the East and West comparison, the counter-tradition and the glossary.

Stream two was a milieu-based extension covering what the first line did not: cybernetics and the Macy Conferences, the administrative and critical split in communications research, RAND, the Congress for Cultural Freedom, elite theory, the neoliberal thought collective, media materialism, control after discipline, institutions as manufacturers of persons, the behavioural state, the pre-twentieth-century sources, and infrastructural power.

Where the two streams overlapped, the overlap was resolved into cross-references rather than repeated. Illich, Agamben, Adorno, Scott, Graeber, Zuboff and Thaler and Sunstein each appear once in full and are cross-referenced elsewhere.

What has been verified, and what has not

The document is a summary. Every substantive claim on this site should be checked against the primary source before it is relied on, and where the document summarizes, a published version should cite.

Concretely, and this is the current state rather than an aspiration:

• Names, dates and institutional facts on this site come from the document. Where the document gives no date, this site gives none.
• Where a claim needs checking, the content file carries a TODO comment saying what would check it. The Schmitt entry carries one: the document names the subject of his Night of the Long Knives essay but not its title or year.
• Where the document records no funder for a milieu, the metadata strip says so rather than guessing. Four of the twelve say it.

Contested and discredited sources

Flagged in place wherever they appear, with who contests them and on what grounds: Wittfogel, MacLean, Le Bon, Stonor Saunders, Gatto, Milgram and Zimbardo. The works index lists them together.

Known gaps

The colonial angle is the largest. Every milieu on this site is North Atlantic. The argument that these techniques were often developed at the periphery and reimported, which Mbembe and Mitchell make, would produce a different site. That version does not exist here.

The document does not cover South Asian, African, Latin American or East Asian traditions of thinking about control.

One theoretical conflict is unresolved at the heart of the constructive half: Gramsci says build organizations, Michels says organizations grow oligarchies. Both cannot be fully right. See the open questions.

How the rules are kept

The editorial rules on the method page are enforced by the build rather than by memory. A script runs before every deployment and fails it if a term is used without a glossary definition, if a thinker or figure page has no objections block, if a milieu records no funder, if house style is broken, or if the Schmitt framing or the Agamben COVID example goes missing.

It also checks that every figure named in the research document appears somewhere on this site, which is a rule that exists because the site once failed it.
