Part six
The counter-tradition
Analysis with no constructive edge produces exactly the paralysis this material is accused of, so here is the other half.
Everything else on this site describes how control works. If that is all you take, the material has done you harm rather than good, because a person who can explain every mechanism and act on none of them is worse off than when they started.
This is the constructive half. It is thinner than the diagnostic half, which is itself a finding worth sitting with.
Mills: turn a trouble into an issue
C. Wright Mills supplies the first move and this site opens with it. A personal failure that turns out to be a shared structural condition is a different object entirely, and it can be acted on collectively in a way that a private failing cannot.
The move is not comfort. It is a reclassification, and it is testable: if fifteen million people have your problem, your character is not the variable.
La Boétie: the power is lent
Étienne de La Boétie, writing around 1548, is the oldest and simplest version. The tyrant has only what you hand over. His account of the ladder of complicity, in which each layer polices the one below because it has a stake, is also the reason withdrawal is hard: you are not one person deciding, you are one person in a structure of people deciding.
Freire: literacy as reading your own situation
Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968), sets banking education, in which information is deposited into passive receptacles, against conscientização, critical consciousness built through dialogue.
Teaching adults to read, in his practice, meant teaching them to read their own situation at the same time, using words drawn from their own conditions. It is the clearest available alternative to the school Bourdieu and Illich describe.
Gramsci: the long build
Gramsci's war of position is the strategic version. Institutions, publications, trained people, decades. Whatever else it is, it is not a quick answer, and the neoliberal thought collective is the twentieth century's best evidence that it works when someone actually does it for fifty years.
Hold it against Michels, who says the organization you build will grow its own oligarchy. That tension is unresolved and it is in the open questions.
Illich: keep the tool below the threshold
Illich is the only figure here whose work is mainly about building. A convivial tool is one anyone can pick up for their own purposes, which enlarges what they can do. Tools for Conviviality (1973) is the design brief, and the test it proposes is simple enough to apply to anything you are about to build: does this make people more capable without it, or less?
Wiener: refuse the funding, in public
Norbert Wiener published his refusal of military funding in the Atlantic in January 1947, with his reasons.
It is a precedent rather than a theory, and it did not change the field. It is on this list because it is the only case in the whole document of someone at the centre of a technology trying to withdraw it from the institution that paid for it, and because any project built out of this research has to answer the same question about its own money.
Havel: take the sign down
Havel's living in truth is the smallest possible unit of action, and the most demanding. Not organizing, not arguing, just declining to perform the assent. He is clear about the cost, which is what separates it from a slogan.
Scott: the hidden transcript is already there
James C. Scott is the reminder that people subject to all of this are not waiting to be told. The hidden transcript exists in every workplace and every institution. Mētis, the practical knowledge that cannot be formalized, is still held by the people doing the work, and defending it is a live political act rather than nostalgia.
Bourdieu: turn it on yourself first
Bourdieu's reflexivity is the discipline that stops this material turning into a way of feeling superior to other people. You are also positioned. Your taste, your credentials and your sense of what is obvious came from somewhere.
Applied honestly, that is uncomfortable, which is how you know it is the real version.
